Balloon Valvuloplasty, also referred to as balloon valvotomy, is a highly effective, non-surgical treatment option designed to correct valvular heart stenosis. In a healthy heart, valve leaflets open wide to let blood flow forward and snap shut to prevent backward leakage. However, due to congenital defects, age-related calcification, or rheumatic heart disease, these leaflets can become thick, stiff, or fused together. This condition—known as stenosis—forces the heart to work exponentially harder to push blood through the narrowed opening, leading to progressive shortness of breath, chronic chest pain, severe fatigue, and eventual heart failure. Instead of performing open-heart chest surgery, an interventional cardiologist utilizes an internal, catheter-guided balloon to physically separate the fused edges of the valve open from the inside out. This procedure is exceptionally advantageous for pregnant women with mitral stenosis, young children or infants with congenital pulmonary valve narrowing, or elderly patients deemed too fragile for standard open surgery. It instantly reduces back-pressure inside the heart chambers, normalizes systemic blood flow, and provides immediate relief from life-limiting symptoms.
